How to make the most of NCERT Class 12 Home Science Book

Home science is one subject that is a mixture of art and science, and it studies different subjects of nutrition, food, living community, psychology and sociology. It is not just for women but for anyone, knowing the importance of work, living, food and nutrition is quite an important aspect. This field of study can be helpful for a career in healthcare, production, food and diet, tourism, textile and clothing etc. 

Syllabus:

Class XII Home Science book has six chapters, for which theoretical marks are 70 and practical marks are 30. We will now learn about the syllabus of this book, It includes chapters of 

  1. Work, Livelihood and career.
  2. Nutrition, food science and technology.
  3. Human development and family studies
  4. Fabric and apparel.
  5. Resource management.
  6. Communication and Extension.

Within these six units, there are eighteen chapters, with a brief explanation of topics and a clear understanding of the subject. There are two parts of the Home science subject, Part I and Part II which have six units each in the book.

Importance of NCERTs:

NCERTs have the right syllabus mentioned in the CBSE board, they are accurate and made by experts in the subject. They are recommended by the CBSE itself, which gives the right information to students. It not only talks about the subject theory but also practical examples, activities to make students understand the concepts easily. 

They are available in the market readily, in online and offline formats. The NCERT has given free access to NCERT pdf on their website. There are some websites that even provide solutions for NCERT and revision material that is based on the questions and activities of Class books. 

NCERT Class 12 Home Science Book gives two parts of the Home science book, Part I and Part II which covers the syllabus. Part I has ten chapters and Part II has fifteen chapters, with a total of 25 chapters talking about the six units, work, fabric, food, family, resources and communication. 

Work, Livelihood and Career:

This unit has one chapter which talks about the work, the definition of work, job and career. Worklife, how to choose a career, how the economy works, and basic rights of livelihood and work ethics, The traditional occupations, background or history behind them, coconut crafts, bamboo crafts, paintings, puppetry, embroidery and textiles. It also gives information about the work issues related to gender, Child labour and children’s work. Rights to work for women, work environment issues for women, and also the life skills and attitude in work life, how to approach work-life, quality, life skills for livelihood etc. 

Nutrition, Food Science and Technology:

Food is one of the necessities like water and shelter, without food a living thing cannot survive on the earth. Good food and good nutrition are helpful for humans to lead healthy life. In this chapter, we read about the food, nutritional status in India, which nutrients are helpful, how do we get them, the best diet plans, how the plans differ, basic concepts of clinical nutrition, career and scope of the nutrition plan and diet.

Public Nutrition and Health topics, discuss the vitamin intakes, vitamin deficiencies, health issues of children like malnutrition, which might lead to death in some cases. We also study catering and food service management in chapter 5, which gives a basic idea of how the food services industry became a large business over time. There are two types of catering services welfare or non-commercial and commercial catering or hotel catering. There are also different types of foodservice systems, like conventional, commissary, ready prepared food which might be stored or kept frozen and taken to heat whenever required and also assembly service, that is manufactured wholly and needs little of seasoning, thawing etc. How to manage the food planning, menu plan, budgeting etc are also discussed in this chapter. Careers in the foodservice industry, all the basics of how to plan, maintain staff and execute them. 

Human Development and Family Studies:

There are chapters on Early childhood care and education, where we discuss the factors of child education, how to enhance their vision on playful education, teach them to learn art, educate numerical basics in a playful and visual manner. Educating children on their career path on what to study or choose a career based on these subject values. There will be guidance on choosing a career in the education sector in teaching or as a guide or counsellor etc. 

There are three chapters in this unit mainly, the one about Childhood care, Guidance and Counselling, Special education and Support services, Management of support services, Institutions and programmes for children, youth and elders. In these chapters, we study and know about all the education, and career plan in it, Special education needs for disabled students. 

Fabric and Apparel:

Textile Industry is leading industry and exports and imports of India are quite large, India has been known for traditional fabrics, handloom designs etc. The concepts discussed here with respect to the functioning of the textile industry, basic concepts on fabric designing, colouring, principles of design, how to prepare or choose for a career in fabric design and also practicals like Craft or design techniques, textile design making, etc. Fashion designing, Institutes and professional careers in it, garments making, textile museums, how to maintain the fabric with care etc factors are discussed in this unit. 

Resource Management, Communication and Extension:

These two units deal with human resource, event management, Consumer education and protection, in which students learn about consumer expectations, how to reach them, knowing the basic concepts of the products, their quality, pricing, packaging, measurements and weights etc. 

Development Communication and Journalism, identifying skills required for a career in communication and journalism. Knowing different methods in communication such as print media, campaign, information and communication technologies, the skills like cognitive and technical and questioning ability etc are discussed in this unit.

All the chapters in Home science, that is of Human Ecology and Family sciences are much helpful to have knowledge on the outer world of career, business and work life.
