Following the box office success of Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers, reuniting the roles of Stark (Downey), Rogers (Evans), Banner (Edward Norton at the time), and Thor (Hemsworth) from earlier Marvel movies, will arrive in theatres in July 2011. Johansson was cast in the character of Romanoff in March 2009, Renner in the role of Barton in June 2010, and Ruffalo in the role of Banner in July 2010. The movie’s debut was later delayed until 2012. After joining the project as director, Whedon revised the original screenplay written by Zak Penn in April 2010. Production began in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in April 2011. It then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in August, and finished in New York City, New York, in September. Avengers Movie Plot
The Asgardian Loki meets the other, the head of the Chitauri extraterrestrial species, in a fateful encounter. The Tesseract is an immensely potent energy source with unknown potential that Loki pledges to recover in exchange for an army that will help him conquer Earth. S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury visits a secret research centre where physicist Dr. Erik Selvig and his colleagues are working on studies using the Tesseract. Unexpectedly, the Tesseract begins to function, opening a wormhole that allows Loki to travel to Earth. Seizing the chance, Loki steals the Tesseract and uses his sceptre to trap Clint Barton, Selvig, and other agents, compelling them to support his cause. In response to the imminent threat, Fury reactivates the “Avengers Initiative.” Agent Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, embarks on a mission to recruit Dr. Bruce Banner, the brilliant scientist with a transformative secret, to track the Tesseract’s gamma radiation emissions. Meanwhile, Fury approaches Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, to retrieve the Tesseract, while Agent Phil Coulson visits Tony Stark, the ingenious billionaire behind the Iron Man suit, to examine Selvig’s research. Loki finds himself in Stuttgart, where Barton procures the necessary resources to stabilize the Tesseract’s power, leading to a confrontation with Rogers, Stark, and Romanoff. Surprisingly, the encounter culminates in Loki’s surrender. Thor, Loki’s adopted brother, shows up while he is being led to S.H.I.E.L.D. and tries to convince him to change his evil plan and go back to Asgard. Loki is ultimately imprisoned on the Helicarrier, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s cutting-edge flying aircraft carrier, thanks to Stark and Rogers’ intervention. Divergent viewpoints on how to handle Loki and the unsettling information that S.H.I.E.L.D. plans to use the Tesseract’s power to create weapons as a deterrent against prospective extraterrestrial threats are voiced within the ranks of the Avengers. As Loki’s agents attack the Helicarrier, the squad is put to the test as tensions grow. Banner’s transformation into the uncontrolled Hulk is brought on by stress. While Thor tries to control the enraged Hulk, Stark and Rogers work together to fix the broken engine. Barton is rendered helpless by Romanoff, who releases him from Loki’s influence. In the middle of the commotion, Loki kills Coulson and flees, dealing the squad a fatal blow. The Avengers are inspired by Fury to put aside their differences and come together as a powerful force by Coulson’s passing. With renewed vigour, they confront Loki, who uses the Tesseract and a wormhole generator created by Selvig to launch the Chitauri fleet’s assault by opening a portal above Stark Tower.
